Towneley from A to Z
John Garstang was a British archaeologist. In 1902, he gave objects from his excavations in Egypt to Lady O'Hagan to pass on to Towneley to begin the museum. He also visited Towneley in November 1902 to help plan the first exhibition. Objects from his excavation at Beni Hasan arrived at Towneley in 1904 and in 1905 he gave a case of pottery from the Egyptian XVIII dynasty.
In 1907, he was appointed Professor of Archaeology at Liverpool University, which holds a large collection of his records. In recent years, students from the university's Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology have helped to record Towneley's Egyptology collection.
