Black Book - Catalogue of the Portraits and Paintings at Towneley 1844

The 1844 catalogue, colloquially known as the "Black Book", was used by the Towneley family as a guide book for their visitors and was the basis for later catalogues, such the valuation of the family paintings in 1886.It has been on loan from the Strachey family since 2001.

In addition to detailed description of the portraits, it contains a general account of the Towneley family (based upon Whitaker's History of Whalley), pedigree charts and a description of the house.
