William Towneley (1714-1742) was the eldest son of Richard Towneley (1689-1735). In 1736 he married Cecilia Standish, the heiress of Standish Hall. The fireplace in the Family dining room shows their joint coat of arms. There is a portrait of him in the oil paintings collection.
He was responsible for doubling the width of the North Wing. For details see Chapter 4 William Towneley 1714-1742 - The extension of the North Wing in "An Architectural History of Towneley Hall" by W. John and Kit Smith, published by Heritage Trust for the North West in 2004.
