Thomas Dunham Whitaker, the historian, of Holme in Cliviger, made use of the library at Towneley when writing the History of Whalley. This book included a description of Towneley with an engraving by James Basire, ( pr91 ), after a watercolour by J M W Turner, ( waco102 ).
In 1803, Whitaker gave Charles Townley(1737-1805) an oak tester bed made for Saville Radcliffe of Todmorden Hall in 1615. The Todmorden Bed as in display in Long Gallery Bedroom 5.
