William Tomlinson was appointed caretaker and chief attendant at Towneley in 1931. He had been chief hallkeeper at Burnley Mechanics' Institute since 1914. He became the museum's first Curator in 1944 and retired in July 1951. He kept detailed diaries of the museum's housekeeping and building work and made scrapbooks relating to the museum's collections.
He died in 1952 and there was an obituary in Burnley Express 21st May 1952, page 6 col. 5-6 .
