The objects were only formally accessioned and given an object number begin with the letter M in 1977, (see Accession Registers). There have been no further accessions since 1977. There are index cards but no photographs have been taken and nothing added to the Modes database.

The single largest group (M552-M608) was the bequest of I. L. Magson of Littleborough, which came to Towneley along with other rocks in 1952.
